The diametrically opposed "hard" and "soft" and "tough" and "tender" go even more than interesting when you change the first words from adjectives to verbs, and back over again.
Is it hard (i.due east., hard) to be soft? Or hard (i.due east., house), however the opposite of soft. Likewise, "tough" and "tender" are words that we usually associate with meat ("Waiter, my filet is a niggling too tough, could you give me a more tender piece?"), which makes sense because that the majority of this song is about hearts and tissue and organs.
Withal, the lyrical strength of these 2 lines stems direct from the fact that they tin exist interpreted in many ways. Is information technology tough to be tender, merely as it's tough to be understanding?
