Corned Beef and Cabbage Rochester Ny
Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day. It's a wonderful excuse to enjoy some corned beef and cabbage and then wash it down responsibly with a pint of Guinness, the legendary Irish dry stout.
Rochester is one of the best cities in the country to enjoy the holiday, according to personal-finance website WalletHub. The site ranked Rochester 18th out of 200 cities in 2018 after looking at 17 metrics, including Irish pubs and restaurants per capita and the lowest price for a three-star hotel on St. Patrick's Day.
Rochester ranked 16th in the number of Irish pubs and 12th in the access to bars. Translation: We like to celebrate and we like to wear green. And there is little reason to believe that things have changed in 2019.
WalletHub estimates Americans will spend $5.9 billion on the holiday and that consumption of Guinness rises 819 percent on St. Patrick's Day.
And if you want to enjoy the holiday with the rest of your Irish brethren, here's a roundup of some of the area's best pubs.
1. Mulconry's Irish Pub
17 Liftbridge Lane East, Fairport
At Jimmy Fallon's favorite upstate bar, you are guaranteed to get a perfectly poured Guinness from people who love and care about the beer.
2. Donnelly's Public House
1 Water St., Fairport
Continue your Fairport festivities with Donnelly's, located a few doors down from Mulconry's. Donnelly's has one of the best taplists in Monroe County, so you're sure to find something awesome on draft.
3. Barry's Old School Irish
2 W. Main St., Webster
This east side gem features a wonderfully cozy environment, the kind of place where you feel like you've known the staff and patrons for years.
4. Carroll's
1768 E. Main St., Rochester
Carroll's is the epitome of a neighborhood bar. It's low-key (except on March 17, when it is packed), comfortable and unassuming. Guinness is always on draft.
5. Jack Ryan's Tavern
825 Atlantic Ave., Rochester
Jack Ryan's features one of the most eclectic and interesting draft beer lineups in Rochester. Like many of the places on this list, it's a well-worn neighborhood bar.
6. Johnny's Irish Pub
1382 Culver Road, Rochester
The intersection of Merchants and Culver roads features three awesome bar establishments: Johnny's, L&M Lanes, and Merchants Bar and Grill. And like Jack Ryan's, Johnny's has incredible draft beer options. It also features great live music.
7. Caverly's Irish Pub,
741 South Ave., Rochester
Cav's is the neighborhood hub of the South Wedge. Walking into Dan Caverly's bar feels like you're walking into a friend's living room. It's that comfortable.
8. Shamrock Jack's
4554 Culver Road, Irondequoit
St. Patrick's Day is a big deal for this Sea Breeze establishment. The festivities go for the entire week and features a giant heated tent to accommodate more patrons.
9. McColley's
89 S. Union St., Spencerport
McColley's is right in the heart of downtown Spencerport. It's named after the McColley family, and like many of the establishments on this list, the McColleys treat everyone like family.
10. Murph's Irondequoit Pub
705 Titus Ave., Irondequoit
Dan Murphy is a great guy. His Titus Avenue establishment is an extension of him. It's warm and comfortable. It's also right next to I-Square. (It used to be home to the best Wednesday night karaoke around. I'm just happy that there is no video footage of me butchering Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London.")
11. O'Lacy's Irish Pub
5 School St., Batavia
O'Lacy's has been a Genesee County destination since 1997. From the outside, the bar looks like something straight out of Dublin. It's the best place in the area for a perfectly poured Guinness.
12. McArdle's
1355 Fairport Road, Fairport
The Albert family wants to make all of its customers feel at home. With both its interior woodwork and high-backed wood booths, McArdle's is a wonderful place to spend the afternoon.
13. O'Callaghan's Pub
470 Monroe Ave., Rochester
It'll be elbow-to-elbow entropy inside this Monroe Avenue establishment, but it should be good-natured and fun at O'Cal's.
14. Salinger's
107 East Ave., Rochester
Salinger's is one of Rochester's best neighborhood bars, and it sits right in the heart of the St. Patrick's Day parade route. If you want to be in the heart of the madness, this is a good place to post up.
15. Dublin Corners Farm Brewery
1906 Main Street (State Route 36), York, Livingston County
Spend the afternoon at Livingston County's first brewery. Co-owner Heather Grant said there will be live music all day, Irish food and good beer. Dublin Corners is worth the drive to York.
16. Kelly's Saloon
71 Main St., Geneseo, Livingston County
The restored Kelly's sits right in the heart of downtown Geneseo and is one of the best spots to spend the holiday in Livingston County. A massive fire gutted the establishment in 2015, but it was rebuilt and is now better than ever.
17. Enright's Thirst Parlor
582 Monroe Ave., Rochester
Monroe Avenue will be jam-packed Saturday. It's easy to hit up a number of spots, including Acme and Charlie's. Enright's is well-worn and relaxed.
18. McGinnity's
534 W. Ridge Road, Rochester
Bridie and Seamus McGinnity opened this Rochester original in 1975 and very little has changed since then. It's still comfortable and you'll be able to get the establishment's famous corned beef and cabbage dinner.
Regardless of where you end up, take care of each other, and please be safe and smart.
